Washington DC-based boutique law firm is looking for a Financial Director/Accountant 

Hours/Schedule:  FT Flexible

Job Type: Direct

Location Requirements: Remote with one day a week in the DC office

Rate: $140,000 – $145,000 salary plus benefits and bonus

Job Description: Manage accounting activities for two small firms providing professional services: a law firm and a consulting firm. Activities include maintaining accounting records, providing financial information and reports to management, serving as the primary liaison with outside accountants, monitoring cash flow, assisting with banking relationships, and ensuring internal controls are adequate.  Responsible for invoicing clients/processing and posting invoice payments and for the overall management of personnel issues.


Management of Financial Accounts
  • Responsible for preparation, maintenance, and reconciliation of general ledger accounts (including P/L statements)
  • Responsible for monitoring and maintaining firms’ commercial banking, credit card, and savings accounts
  • Close books quarterly and send info to outside accountants 
  • Prepare a weekly report for the management committees detailing cash on hand, accounts receivable aging, and new matters
  • Responsible for payment of all company bills from vendors, outside professionals
  • Expense Reports – review of and payment of all expense reports filled by employees and partners
  • Monitoring and Management of firm insurance coverages including professional liability, workers' compensation, general business insurance

Management of Tax-Related Corporate Issues

  • Responsible for regular interface with firms’ outside accountants (US (federal and state) and UK) for preparation of quarterly and annual tax documents
  • Responsible for filing all annual tax documents (in close coordination with firms’ outside accountants and Managing Partner/Chairman), including completion of regular tax payments due
  • Responsible for all reporting requested for tax-related issues by Managing Partner/Chairman
  • Annually provide 1099 information to outside accountants who prepare the forms for our distribution and filing
  • For the UK corporate subsidiary, prepare information for the UK accountants to file the VAT return and review the UK annual reports and tax forms provided by the UK accountants.
  • Responsible for aggregating and overseeing timekeeping by employees
  • Collect time sheets from consultants and enter time for the prior month into the billing and accounting system
  • Prepare projections at year-end to help manage cash and provide input for various compensation calculations
  • Prepare various reports used for compensation evaluations for lawyers and consultants (annual)
  • Prepare ad hoc reports as requested related to financial, timekeeping, and benefits issue
Invoicing/Account Receivable or Client Billable Matter
  • Responsible for preparation of all invoices submitted to clients, utilizing Centerbase, the firms’ timekeeping and billing application and Client online invoice portals which can vary by client (Serengeti, Collaborati, Ariba, Fieldglass, etc.)
  • Submit monthly accruals as required by client
  • Provide W-9s, bank instructions, and any other paperwork required by clients for billing and payment purposes
  • Provide various information to attorneys and consultants such as payments received, billing reports, and copies of invoices
  • Responsible for interacting with partners/employees to prepare invoice drafts, make revisions as needed/requested, manage alternative billing arrangements and matter-specific budgets (as instructed by the applicable partner/employee), finalize invoices, then submit invoices as set forth above monthly (or ad hoc basis as needed)
  • Responsible for tracking all incoming payments and posting to appropriate accounts in Centerbase, maintaining overall payments received and accounts receivable
  • Responsible for following up on unpaid invoices/uncollected fees, working with clients’ billing departments, and through online billing portals to obtain payments on receivables, escalating to professionals as required.
  • Responsible for working with the partner in charge/managing director to prepare accounts receivable reports on a monthly and ad hoc basis
  • Provide monthly report summarizing billings and receivables for the reporting period  
Management of Employee Benefits and Human Resources
  • Responsible for bi-weekly payroll entry for employees via Paycor payroll system
  • Calculate monthly payroll for UK employees and submit information to UK accountants
  • Responsible for monthly payment of distributions to partners/managing directors
  • Interface with employees as needed to ensure health insurance and retirement deductions are accurate
  • Work with health insurance broker and partner in charge of health insurance issues to obtain and review quotes for health insurance plan; make recommendations to managing partner re: selection of annual health insurance plan for employees and partners
  • Oversee 401K Plan including, but not limited to: inputting employee and partner contributions and changes to retirement accounts, preparing annual census and other information for annual 401k plan testing, working with the Plan sponsor to resolve any issues, and maintaining all required records.
  • Oversee employee onboarding and offboarding
  • Maintain Employment Records 
  • Overall Responsibility for HR Issues
Management of Office Space 
  • Order and maintain office supplies and equipment
  • Interface with landlord’s on-site office staff regarding incoming mail/packages, meeting coordination, outgoing mail, etc.
  • Responsible for payment of monthly lease
  • Arrange for conference room space in office for meetings/events
  • Interface with outside IT professional team when required for access to firms’ onsite space


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or a related field
  • Relevant years of working experience, other relevant training and certification
  • Must have strong analytical skills with attention to details
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Strong work ethic, and be a self-starter with the ability to work independently for long stretches
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to interact with management, clients, employees and vendors in a professional manner
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Reports directly to the Managing Partner
  • Full proficiency with Microsoft Office with emphasis on Word and Excel.  Ability to learn how to use/work with the firm’s document management database, NetDocuments, and its timekeeping and billing tool, Centerbase
