Non-profit in Washington, DC seeks part-time HR Generalist for hybrid schedule

Hours/Schedule:  Starting at 20-25 hours/week, could grow over time.

Job Type: Contract to Hire, candidate will start as a temp-to-perm and if successful, convert to client's payroll. 

Location Requirements: Hybrid, 2 days/week on site in DC office    

Rate: $40/hour 

Job Description: HR Generalist will help us manage day-to-day HR processes, provide superior internal customer service to our staff, and help set us apart as the best place to work employer. This role is essential to our work culture, will be the super glue that holds everything together, and will be the face of HR.

The HR Generalist will be responsible for the day-to-day HR operations, services, and exceptional support that meets or exceeds expectations. The focal areas this role impacts include, employee relations, performance management, DEIB support and administration, HRIS, payroll, onboarding, training & development, records management, benefits administration, recruitment, professional development, and other functions as needed.

The HR Generalist works closely with insurance brokerage teams to ensure employees get the most out of their benefits. Handle process-related tasks for all benefit programs such as insurance, FMLA, ADA, FSA, HSA, 401k, and worker's compensation claims. Take the lead on benefits enrollments, terminations, and qualified changes. This position partners with and will work collaboratively with finance, accounting, operations, administration, and payroll teams.



  • Manage HR department email communication and provide timely responses to staff questions or concerns about personnel policy, benefits, and HRIS employee portal related issues
  • Track all employee relations matters in our database
  • Able to work under pressure with strict deadlines
  • Provide high-level organizational and compliance support with and manage special projects with efficiency
  • Support the development and implementation of human resource policies and procedures, with research and data collection, formatting documents, etc.
  • Maintain employee status changes, coordinated with IT to ensure accuracy with  employee directory, and update organizational charts
  • Support employees with efficient problem-solving when human resources issues arise
  • Promote a strong and collaborative remote work experience. In coordination with other staff, implement and execute remote culture building activities and events,
  • Conduct and analyze exit interviews and make actionable recommendations based on data
  • Manage departmental reporting by running weekly, monthly, semi-annual, and annual reports for various departments and as required 
  • Respond to unemployment claims and ensure all HR mail is addressed in a timely manner
  • Work in partnership with Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, team on staff engagement and culture building activities

Benefits Administration

  • Assist in administering benefits, compensation, and employee performance programs
  • Support compensation-related activities such as new hire offers, salary increases, promotions, and bonuses to ensure compliance with organization's compensation framework
  • Manage monthly benefit premium invoicing and reconciliation

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Supports HR Director in the full life-cycle recruitment process by coordinating job postings, reviewing resumes, performing reference checks and telephone screening, scheduling interviews, and other tasks as needed
  • Handles tasks related to employee life cycle including onboarding and offboarding
  • Conducts or acquires background checks, employment verifications, and employee eligibility (I9) verifications
  • Implements new hire orientation and employee recognition programs
  • Demonstrates the ability to deal appropriately with sensitive and confidential information
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state employment laws and regulations is critical

Payroll Support

  • Responsible for administering payroll (back-up support), entering changes in HRIS, and ensuring data is current and accurate
  • Communicate with supervisors (as needed) to resolve issues with payroll
  • Track reported issues with payroll system and work with vendor to have corrected
  • Process wage garnishment and other deductions
  • Train new hires and staff on the correct use of the payroll system


Required Education & Experience

  • Two- or four-year degree preferred
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft suite applications, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • 5+ years of experience as an HR Generalist or HRBP (preferred in a non-profit work environment)
  • Recent, relevant experience working in a unionized work environment preferred
  • 3 years of recent experience processing payroll 
  • Proficient use of HRIS as the primary instrument for HR and corporate communications, action items, and resolutions
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, diverse, transitioning organization
  • Must be flexible, resourceful, and proactive

Technical & HRIS

  • Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office Applications
  • Advanced experience with Paycom, Paycor or similar HRIS system
  • Experienced using SharePoint
  • Have superior attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Proven track record of maintaining employee confidentiality
  • Expert with various HRIS applications
  • Experience with payroll systems
