Hours/Schedule: 30 hours/week

Location Requirements: Hybrid, initial first 30 days will be onsite in their office in Washington, DC, then work can be done both remotely and onsite as needed
Rate: $35-$40/hr.
Job Description: Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Staff Accountant is a member of the finance team. This position provides assistance relating to general ledger accounting and supports financial reporting services for the organization driving continuous improvement throughout the finance department in support of the organization’s objectives. The Staff Accountant will be part of a team responsible for ensuring that the financial transactions of the organization are accurately recorded in accordance with established policies and generally accepted accounting principles.
Responsibilities:
- Perform accounting functions including the recording of accounts receivable, cash receipts, accounts payable, cash disbursements, investments, fixed assets, grants, and all other transactions.
- Prepare journal entries to record general ledger activity, cash receipts, cash disbursements, travel expense reports, and monthly closing entries.
- Ensure that financial transactions are recorded accurately, timely and in accordance with established policies and generally accepted accounting principles.
- Prepare general journal and cash receipts.
- Assist in the preparation of the materials necessary to meet monthly and annual financial reporting needs of the organization.
- Work with the Director of Finance and the Executive Director to develop financial goals and to prepare the organization’s budget for the upcoming years.
- Assist with generating various ad hoc financial reports for the Director of Finance, National Treasurer , and Finance Committee.
- Assist with the preparation of responses to inquiries from federal, state and local government agencies to satisfy regulatory reporting requirements
- Provide support and assistance in the preparation, planning and execution of external audits and internal control reviews of business processes.
- Assist in the preparation of the annual federal tax return for the organization.
- Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Finance and the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of at least two years of performing accounting or bookkeeping duties within a non-profit organization.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
- Sound knowledge of general accounting principles and non-profit-specific accounting procedures
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Power Point and Word and the ability to effectively utilize accounting software
- Prior experience using Sage/Abila a plus
- Ability to generate data from an accounting system to prepare detailed financial reports.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and results oriented
- Self-starter with initiative to proactively investigate discrepancies and offer process improvements
- Proficient writing, editing and proofreading skills with the ability to gather and organize information appropriate
- Excellent ability to organize and prioritize daily work, multiple requests or assignments, and deadlines, while managing long-term assignments
- A high degree of professionalism, confidence, and flexibility that allows the incumbent to work collaboratively and effectively with stakeholders and colleagues of diverse backgrounds
- Excellent ability to work well in a team environment, and maintain a good working relationship with staff, vendors, auditors, donors, financial institutions, and non-profit partners
