J.R. has 10 years of experience as Assistant Editor for a scholarly and documentary editing project, the Santayana Edition, at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. She completed her MA in English with a graduate certificate in Professional Editing, focusing on documentary and critical editing practices. As the Assistant Editor for the Santayana Edition, a philosophy scholarly edition focusing on the letters and writings of George Santayana, she researched and wrote annotations, created and compiled indices, conducted multi-state individual and team proofreading from transcription to page-proofs, and helped with the layout of the text, images, and prepared files to be sent to MIT Press for publication. The following are skills she gained and programs she used while working at the Santayana Edition: scanning documents and using an OCR program, using a Hinman collator to compare different versions of text, using Quark and InDesign to layout text and index publications, using Photoshop to prepare images for layout, researching and evaluating original manuscripts, and preparing grant applications for the NEH. Currently J.R. volunteers at the Newseum archives, where she photographs and catalogues print news materials. J.R. is also a Girl Scout Service Unit Manager and leader of a junior Girl Scout troop. In her position as Service Unit manager she leads monthly meetings and presents information to leaders and volunteers from 25+ troops.
